The New York senate has now approved its same-sex marriage bill, following weeks of political wrangling and a nail-biting finish.
29 Democratic senators were joined by four Republicans to get theMarriage Equality Act across the line with a final 33-29 vote – just one less vote in favour would have resulted in another defeat, just as a similar measure was unsuccessful only two years ago.
New York now joins five other US states – Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire – as well as Washington DC, which allow same-sex couples to marry.
Manhattan’s gay community is now celebrating the decision, which coincides perfectly with this weekend’s Pride festivities and marking the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
And as our photo shows, the city’s iconic Empire State Building has been lit in rainbow colours to make the occasion.
